On your next visit to your florist in NYC, ask to see their selection of peonies.

Surprisingly enough there many people who still shy away from this wonderful flower. I, on my part, try to introduce people to flowers they might have seen, but never purchased. Peonies is one of those flowers that once I encourage a client to deviate from his usual “bouquet of roses for girlfriend,” and instead take a bouquet of peonies, he always come back for more.

NYC city florists are lucky because most imported flowers from Holland first land in one of New York’s airports. This fact alone allows florist to pay less for imported flowers and thus pass the saving on to their clients.

If you happen to live in NYC, it will be a good idea to know what flowers are in season at any particular time of the year.

Just because your New York florist has a huge selection of flowers at any given time, that does not mean that all those flowers you see are in season. In fact – many of them are there because your florist paid higher prices for them just so he or she can have a larger selection in the store.

Flowers that are there, but not are in their natural season cost way much more than flowers that are in season and, therefore, abundant.

This holds true to all flowers, but especially to the peony; while a stem of a good quality Peony can cost $2 – $4 in season, that price can triple when out of season.

If you have not done so before, try to purchase peonies in the season (April to June). You will love to watch how this tight ball opens into a huge flower that resembles a jumbo rose, but with petals that are silky and way much more delicate.

Image via Wikipedia

Here are some interesting facts about Peonies.

Name: Peonies
Native to: Asian, Southern Europe and Western North America
Availability – April through June
Longevity – Seasonal (may last from April till June).
Dries well – Yes!
Varieties – The Bartzella, Blaze and Border Charm make up the over 230 varieties of peonies.

Handling and Care - Peonies should be fed a half a cup of low nitrogen fertilizer when growth researches 2 or 3 inches high. For gardeners and planet owners, peonies need little care and survive in warmer climates with direct sun. Water frequently (at least once per day) during the springtime or allow for it to sit outside and collect rainwater. Additionally, cut the stems as close to the root of the plant as possible to avoid disease left by rotting plants.
Fun Facts – Peonies were originally cultivated in China over 2,000 years ago, living through harsh winters. The Chinese used the roots for food and medicine purposes. In fact, the Chinese do not consider a peony just a peony; rather, they call it the Flower Fairy after being named the national flower of China during the Qing Dynasty in 1903

Peony is a delicate flower and requires special conditions for optimal self life. Purchasing peonies from a street vendor, especially when you do not know what to look for, is not a good idea. Therefore, your better option is to walk into your favorite florist in NYC for you peonies between April and June.

If you walked into a florist in NYC 20 years ago you would rarely come across orchid plants. Nowadays orchid plants have become so popular that even stores like Costco sell them from time to time.

When you first give or receive a phalaenopsis, it will usually have several open buds and several that are not. Depending on the size, some plants have several stems, each with a bunch of flowers/buds.

Although the plant is originally native to Southeast Asia, In recent years many growers started growing them in different parts of the world, hence the year round availability as well as the wide popularity.

I love to check from time to time what other florists in NYC have in their windows. I must admit many of my colleagues have come a long way, while others have remained frozen it time. And although at Heather Floral Company we proud ourselves for having one of the largest, if not the largest, selection of orchid plants – some of my colleagues and competition have caught up nicely.

There is nothing as beautiful as a multi-stemmed Phalaenopsis orchid plant that is potted in a nice, rustic container, covered with moss and have a few twigs of curly willow pointing North. That last item lands a bit more movement and grace to your plant.

Did you know that for the price of a dozen, high quality, long stemmed roses in any of the better Florist in NYC you can get a good looking Phalaenopsis orchid plant? Moreover, while roses usually last for several days, this lovely orchid can potentially lasts for years to come.

Here are some interesting facts about Phalaenopsis

Name: Phalaenopsis
Native to: Southeast Asia
Availability – Year Round.
Longevity – Up to 3 months per blooming cycle.
Varieties – Popular varieties include the Clown Alley, the Phalaenopsis Mambo, the orange lip and the red lip.
Handling and Care - Fertilizing is important. To prevent wilting of your plant, fertilize your plant every season. This particular plant grows better when left in indirect sunlight. It’s optimum temperature is between 70 to 80 degrees F. Water your plant early in the morning but do not water daily. Water every 4 to 7 days. After it has flowered the first time, cut the stem just above the node where the first flower bloomed.

Fun Facts - Phalaenopsis is Greek for Phalluna meaning the word “moth” and “opsis” meaning resembling. Thus the name Moth Orchid came out of the Greek derivation.

Next time, when you walk into any Florist in NYC to buy a floral gift for a birthday, anniversary or any other occasion – think Phalaenopsis Orchid.

Heather Floral Co., a NYC Florist Recommends using exotic foliage…

Cut Exotic Foliage is the way to go when you want to bring nature to your house without spending a fortune.
Mostly to be found in tropical areas, these colorful branches are simple to put together. The trick in to make sure to change the water in the vase every other day, adding to it a few drops of Chlorine in order to prevent bacteria.

One more thing you would want to do is cut about half an inch from the bottom of the stem. The fresh cut will allow the stem to absorb water to its ‘heart’ content and thus last longe

Unlike most other foliage, tropical foliage tend to be very colorful and to last very long.

Filling up a vase with one kind or an assortment of these lovely, exotic ‘greens’ – with or without a few exotic flowers – make for a gorgeous centerpiece.

This NYC Florist…

…says the best news is that you do not have to have any great designing talent or spend a fortune to create a great masterpiece. Next time you feel like going exotic/tropical get yourself a bunch of these greens and experiment. You will be surprised at how easy it is to come up with something you will be proud to invite your friends to see.

I have to fly up to Syracuse NY from Arizona for a wedding this October. I am designing the floral arrangements for it (2 bouquets, 3 corsages, 5 boutonnieres and 2 kissing balls with primarily roses being used). So my question is does anyone know a way that I can take them on the plane or under the plane with me preassembled? I really don’t want to use a random florist in NY and I’ll be pretty pressed for time once I get there. I can’t ship them because it’s a destination wedding so no residence to send them to up there. If anyone can think of a way to do it, how to package them etc please let me know Thanks!

I have used FTD affiliated florists all over the world (Event Coordinator) and have never been disappointed. To be 100% sure I could deliver on time, I would order in all the required flowers, have them prepare the corsages and boutonnieres (child’s play) and have them start the basic build for the bouquets and balls. I would put the finishing touches when I arrived (by adding in extra time allowance).

They are usually the ”best’ florists in any given city but the pricing is too! However you can easily communicate via cellphone and have them send update photos on a continual basis, so you can ensure that your directions are being followed …. it’s worth the money in the long run. You also get a real ‘contact’ person who handles your file from start to finish (as best as the time zones allow).

I’ve used them from North America to Israel … and they’ve never failed me yet !

Good Luck

you should call wholesalers and find out how much they sell their product for and figure out if you can meet the competitions pricing and make a buck

Okay, so my 15th birthday is (supposed to be) my most special day (quinceanera) and so far i’m not excited about it. why? because my moms being insanely indecisive and rejecting EVERYTHING.

Not to be a brat in all, but this is the one day thats supposed to be about me, and she’s changing everything to suit her!

Every birthday i’ve had has benefited/been arrange by her for her personal enjoyment (i’ll admit, it was fun) and we agreed that we can do WHATEVER it is i want for my birthday this year. And with that the dissappointment begins….

MY FIRST IDEA WAS:
To have a party. With caterers, a special cake and entertainment(not performers, just like deejays)..one of those big parties with lots of people. It seemed as though she found nothing wrong with this, as she gave me the names of caterers and bakers and even gave me ideas for florists and other expensive things i could have at my party. She even pointed out a $500 dress.

But no.
About a month later after all this, when i bring up my cake she goes, "Well why don’t we just go to Sam’s and have them make the cake? They can put designs on it. " and " Why don’t I just make the food like I did for your sister’s quince?"
- Mind you SHE gave me the idea to go to a baker where i would get a special cake with the fondant designs to match my party and truly make it me. Also, my sisters quince was 30 people. Mine was expected to be 250+.
And icing on the birthday cake, she tells me "Well why dont you have grandma make your dress?"
- My grandma can make a dress, no lie, but nothing sweet sixteen worthy.

So I trashed the party idea.

Next, when I told my mom i didn’t want a party, she said , "okay let’s go somewhere, we could do the whole California-Vegas-Seattle tour (we talked about it a few months before the idea of my party came up) so I happily said yes, as this would be the perfect equivalent to my party.

But nope.
A few days later, she says: "why not just go to Vegas?"
I agreed, as i LOVE vegas.

Later…
I go to her room to show her a hotel I found (a very cheap rate at the bellagio- a VERY nice hotel) and she says "I don’t think vegas would be the best. I don’t wanna walk around. It’s too hot out there. "

WTF?!
So, after a few months of being pissed off at not having a good birthday planned, she later tells me we’re gonna go up to NY for a family reunion on the 4th.
Mind you my birthday is 3 days before the 4th. (The 1st)
And of course, my parents want to leave 2 days before my birthday. (The 29th)
So, getting over the fact that I won’t be anywhere special, nor will I be able to see my friends on my day, i suggest going to the city for the day

SHE SAYS YES FINALLY!

We plan on going on one of those double-decker bus tours, just the 4 of us. So we can shop and tour and do whatever whenever, without the bother of excess people. All we needed was the resrevation, and we’d be done.

I go on facebook that night and what do i see on our family reunion event page?
My mom: "Hey guys, why don’t we all go on that double-decker bus tour? We’re gonna go on the 1st, it’d be great if you all could join! It’s really great and you can see so much of the city!"
27 likes and 30 comments.

She knows i’m on that page and i’m her friend so its definitely not some kind of surprise thing for me.
She could’ve had the decency to tell people it was my birthday… (They don’t know, it’s my dads side of the family, who we’re not in touch with as much)

I ask her why she told everyone and she said " I think it’d be more fun with everyone there." And she goes listing out family members, mainly ones with little children -______-
I tell her " I thought it’d just be the 4 of us, just together and stuff? Now we have to leave when everyone else wants to and we have to find activities for EVERYONE and not just the four of us! It’s definitely not what we planned!"
She says, "Oh well."

I’M PISSED!
I’m sooo sick of her raising my expectations and then letting me down continuously! She falls back on her promises and expects me not to care. I thought this would actually be a birthday about me, where I can be happy. Now I’ll be stuck on a bus with my loud family and a bunch of screaming midgets.
I texted my sister about this and she says "Sorry :/ "
Am I being crazy or something?! Am I not wrong to be mad? I’ve compromised plenty of times with my mother and now she wants to go ahead and change my final plans?

So now we’re going on some night tour and we’re not going anywhere that day until that night.

Please don’t think i’m pissed for settling with new york, i’m not a spoiled brat. Our family just likes to travel, so i&#39
Sorry if i said Sweet Sixteen worthy, i meant quince.

I’m half hispanic and i chose a quince over a sweet sixteen…i often get the terms confused….

SORRY JEEZ!

to be perfectlly honest i understand how you feel it happends to me all the time
no you are not wrong to be mad
try telling everybody going its your bday and ask if they can add something to the reunion for your bday
also have your friends throw a small party for you so they can help

I have bought them before but never ordered it online. She lives in NY. I am couple of states away at the moment.. I want to know if there is a difference between using a Regular flower delivery website OR A shop that’s close to her that has a website where I can order..

Even though the later is only local would there be any other difference other than that?

The best way for you to order flowers is to go to your local flower shop, pick something out, and they will relay what you want to her local florist. This way you get a chance to see something in person, ask opinion of the florist. If you can’t go, and must to it online, that’s ok, too.

I want to send my gf some flowers for this valentines. This is the first time I am "sending" someone flowers. I want to know if there is a difference between using a Regular flower delivery website OR A shop that’s close to her that has a website where I can order..

Even though the later is only local would there be any other difference other than that?

I suggest to use definitely a local florist directly. Online florists are convenient but like the previous person said, it ends up locally anyway. Also, online retailers are "middle men" that take a "service" cut from the 50 or 100 dollars you want to spend. By the time the order gets to the local store (after going through several other "services") the money has shriveled and your bouquet gets smaller and/or the flowers cheaper and of lesser quality because the little flower shop that’s ends up with the order has to meet ends.
Best is to find a florist near by online, call them, find out exactly what you get for your money, size, quality, type of flowers etc. You can confirm later with your girlfriend if she got what you ordered, plus its always a good idea to support a local small business

Trying to track someone at "proflower" type companies is a headache.

Good luck!
